Police foil robbery, arrest sergeant, bank worker cutting into bank’s strongroom
The pair of Sergeant Promise Ukwuoma and Samuel Ndudiri, an employee of Access Bank, Rumuolumeni Branch, in Rivers State, have both been arrested for plotting to rob the bank alongside others said to be on the run.
Reports say the pair were fished out after discreet investigations by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team of the Rivers State Police Command with assistance from the Technical Intelligence Unit of the Nigeria Police.
A statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, said the foiled robbery attack was masterminded by Ndudiri, the Access Bank employee with the assistance of the police sergeant.
Reports say the gang had brought a filled gas cylinder to the Access Bank premises to blow up the strong room and were already cutting the main door into the bank when they were apprehended by security operatives who stormed the scene of the incident.
The police however only caught two of the six-member robbery gang as a police corporal, Gabriel Igwe, of the 19 Police Mobile Force, and three others are currently on the run.
Commenting further, the state PPRO said; “We have effected the arrest of a serving Police Sergeant and bank staff involved in bank robbery and recovered two AK47 rifles belonging to serving personnel on 23/12/2016 at about 1135hrs.
“Sequel to the arrest and handing over of three suspects involved in Access Bank Eagle Cement Rumuelumeni branch Robbery to Intelligence Response Team by CP, Rivers State for discreet investigation, IRT Operatives immediately commence investigation and with technical assistance from TIU (Technical Intelligence Unit), two key members of the gang were arrested,” he stated.
